Course Format
What makes Test Preps courses different?
Our courses are comprised of small, ability-based groups that enable Test Prep’s instructors to tailor instruction and offer more personalized attention to each student. We teach our students strategies and tactics they can utilize to improve their SAT scores. While practicing these, students are also reviewing the high school Math and English content tested on the digital SAT. Compare our program with the competition. We truly are different!
What is a typical class like?
Our small group classes include interactive strategy lessons followed by guided, timed practice with each section of the test. Homework is assigned weekly and checked thoroughly at the beginning of every class. Students will complete practice tests using their provided textbook and Bluebook – a new digital testing application available in conjunction with their College Board account. Students regularly conference with the tutor to set goals and assess progress.
How much homework can I expect?
Students are assigned approximately 3-4 hours of homework for the week, corresponding to the previous class’s curriculum. We strongly encourage students to break homework into 2-4 manageable chunks rather than completing it all in one sitting. Success on the dSAT depends in large part on the work a student puts in at home, internalizing the strategies we teach, and then conscientiously completing practice tests. Since we all know how busy high school students are, please be sure that your teen has the time to commit to this endeavor when you sign them up. The best time for them to take the dSAT is when they are available to make it a priority. Missed classes must be made up before the following class with an additional cost of $125 for a 1.5-hour make-up session.
Scheduling
When should a student take a digital SAT course?
We realize how busy high school students are and believe the ideal time to take the course is when their schedule allows time for the extra work involved in preparing for the SAT. Consider starting early! Why wait until Spring, which is often the busiest time of their high school tenure?
Math readiness is critical. Students who are a year ahead in Math are ready to try the dSAT or ACT as they finish Algebra 2/Trigonometry in their sophomore year. Juniors taking Algebra 2/Trig should wait until later in the fall to get started. Also, please take into consideration commitments to sports, music programs, extra-curricular activities (Mock Trial, DECA, dance, musicals, etc.), and family vacations. Remember that April and May are especially busy for students taking AP classes.
Finally, we strongly recommend that students take the SAT immediately upon completion of the Test Preps course while the strategies and tactics are fresh in their minds.
When should we register for a Test Preps digital SAT course?
A student should register as soon as possible because class sizes are limited to ensure our small group format. Classes fill up quickly, and it is not unusual for registration to be closed several weeks in advance of the starting date.
Can I enroll in a digital SAT course that has already started?
A student may still enroll in a course after the first class if spaces are available. However, the missed class must be made up before the next class. The fee for this option is the full cost of the course plus a private tutoring fee of $125 for a 1.5-hour make-up session.
Do you offer a guarantee that my score will increase?
Our experience has been that students who actively participate in our 6-week course and conscientiously complete all assigned homework will gain the confidence and skills that are the key ingredients to success on the dSAT. We do not offer a money-back “guarantee” per se, but we believe strongly that a Test Preps course guarantees a well-prepared student, which results in improved dSAT scores! Our incredible growth is indicative of the number of referrals we have received from very satisfied clients. Please check out our Testimonial page to hear why parents and students are big fans of Test Preps! Or ask us for a referral from someone in your school community.
Attendance
What is the attendance policy?
Since each class serves as the foundation for the one following it, all classes are mandatory. If one is missed, it must be made up before the next class with time for the student to complete assigned homework. Private make-up classes cost $125 for the 1.5-hour session.
dSAT Information
How many times can a student take the digital SAT?
There is not a set number, but most WNY students will take the dSAT at least 2 or 3 times. Keep in mind that simply retaking the dSAT will probably not significantly increase a student’s score. Preparation and diligent practice are essential in order to impact a positive change. That said, some colleges now “super-score” and take the highest dSAT scores from all tests taken.
How do I register for the digital SAT?
The dSAT test dates and registration deadlines can be found online at collegeboard.org. In order to avoid late registration fees and increase your chances of taking the dSAT at the testing center of your choice, a student should register for the exam at least 8 to 10 weeks before the testing date. Registration can be completed online at collegeboard.org.
